INDIA - Jammu & Kashmir - The Houseboat

We stayed on this houseboat on Lake Dal for several days. We shared the boat with a pleasant American couple who worked on Wall Street. This is significant, because just before we were there, Black Monday occurred. This was much a worse stock market crash in percentage terms than the Great Depression in 1929, so we could imagine how they felt, being more or less cut off from phone, TV and radio. These images were digitised from 3R prints of photos taken on a trip in October 1987. Images digitised from old 3R prints.
Our houseboat for a few nights; Being made of cedar, these boats have a delightful fragrance inside.; Our houseboat, Lake Dal, Kashmir.JPG; ; ©ROY_GRUBB [3163]
The elaboration of the interiors is striking; Not what you might expect in a boat, but very exotic.; IMG_4966.JPG; ; ©ROY_GRUBB [3157]
Not what I'd choose for my own home, but comfortable.; IMG_4976.JPG; ; ©ROY_GRUBB [3159]

Carved cedar; An important contributor to the overall fragrance.; IMG_4981.JPG; ; ©ROY_GRUBB [3161]
Being October it was cold at night but this stove kept us warm.; I remember it was worrying on a wooden boat when it was lit on the first night of our stay - sparks flew out of the chimney.; IMG_4982.JPG; ; ©ROY_GRUBB [3162]
This is the man who looked after us. Lit the fire, did the good Indian cooking and gave us advice about where to go and what to see.; IMG_4975.JPG; ; ©ROY_GRUBB [3158]
